Orlando Pirates stay clear of Kaizer Chiefs in race for Soweto bragging rights

Six DStv Premiership matches were played in midweek as the battle hots up for Soweto bragging rights.

Three matches took place on Tuesday, 5 March, one of which saw Kaizer Chiefs edge Golden Arrows 1-0 at the FNB Stadium thanks to an 11th-minute goal by Wandile Duba.

In other fixtures played on Tuesday evening, Stellenbosch FC beat Cape Town City FC 1-0, while AmaZulu and Swallows played to a 1-1 draw.

A further three matches were contested on Wednesday, 6 March.

In the pick of the ties, Orlando Pirates were held to a 1-1 draw by Cape Town Spurs who have proved to be a ‘bogey’ side for the Buccaneers in the league this season having picked up four points from their two matches.

Elsewhere, Chippa United beat Richards Bay 3-0, while Sekhukhune United edged Royal AM 1-0.

Meanwhile, as reported by The South African website, the clash between TS Galaxy and log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns was called off ahead of kick-off after the TS Galaxy team bus was involved in an accident en route to Mbombela in which the driver of a VW Polo was killed.

In the battle for Soweto bragging rights between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, their one point on Wednesday saw the Buccaneers stay a point clear of Amakhosi with just 11 matches remaining in the 2023/2024 season.

Orlando Pirates are in fifth place with 30 points after 19 matches, with Kaizer Chiefs in sixth spot with 29 points after the same number of games played.

The two sides will do battle in a much-anticipated Soweto derby on Saturday, 9 March at 15:30 in a clash which could go a long way to deciding which club finishes the season higher in the standings.
