Only the most die-hard of Orlando Pirates supporters will recall the last time their beloved side completed a Soweto derby ‘double’ over fierce rivals Kaizer Chiefs.
But history could repeat itself this weekend at the FNB Stadium!
Orlando Pirates last completed a league ‘double’ over Kaizer Chiefs in the 2008/2009 season under then coach Ruud Krol.
It remains the only time the Buccaneers have beaten Amakhosi home and away in the same season since the PSL’s professional era kicked off in the 1996/1997 season.
The Buccaneers won the head-to-head clash earlier in the season 1-0 thanks to a 20th-minute winner from Evidence Makgopa.
For the record, Kaizer Chiefs boast four Soweto derby league ‘doubles’ over Orlando Pirates in 2005/2006 (Ernst Middendorp), 2019/2020 (Middendorp), 2021/2022 (Stuart Baxter) and 2022/2023 (Arthur Zwane).
This weekend’s clash which could well go a long way to determining which club finishes the season higher in the standings.
Heading into the match, which will kick off at 15:30, Orlando Pirates find themselves in fifth place in the log with 30 points after 19 matches.
Kaizer Chiefs are sixth on 29 points after the same number of matches played.
The match will be screen live on SuperSport channel 202 and SABC 1.
At the time of publishing tickets are still available for purchasing and range from R100 to R170.
While Saturday’s Soweto derby will hog the headlines – and rightly so – it’s not the only DStv Premiership fixture to be played this weekend.
