How much money will Chiefs need to sign Pitso & Percy Tau?

Kaizer Chiefs want a new coach and they’re also short of goals. The media will have you believing that Pitso Mosimane and Percy Tau are the answer, but is that even financially realistic?

Former Sundowns duo wanted at Kaizer Chiefs

Pitso Mosimane and Percy Tau dovetailed during a glorious, trophy-laden spell for Mamelodi Sundowns. Tau has since enjoyed stints with Brighton in the Premier League, Genk and Brugge in Belgium (he represented the former in the Champions League, with a highlight performance against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu).

Tau is now with Egyptian giants Al Ahly, a club with which he has won eight trophies, including the most coveted CAF Champions League. The Lion of Judah will be 30 in May, which begs the question, can Kaizer Chiefs still squeeze some value out of the left-footer? As things stand, Percy Tau will reportedly pocket R23.2m annually in the first year of his new deal with Egyptian giants Al Ahly. Monthly, that’s roughly R1.93m a month. The annual figure could rise to R31m in the third year. That’s R2 million a month, at the lower end.

Pitso Mosimane needs no introduction, but his salary is a stumbling block

Jingles was earning roughly R3 million a month with Al Ahli before they ripped up his contract when he steered them to the Saudi Pro League. Now, he’s signed a short-term deal with Abha and although there are no reliable figures available, it’s unlikely he would have taken a pay cut on a four-month contract. Can Kaizer Chiefs shell out that much monthly to secure his esteemed services?

Can Chiefs afford R5 million extra on their monthly tab to have Pitso and Percy Tau around? That’s before we even deal with transfer fees and signing-on bonuses.
