The news is official and one of the most divisive figures in the current Manchester United setup is set to depart the club.
Manchester United have confirmed that Director of Football John Murtough has left the club after 11 years.
It confirms an earlier report relayed by The Peoples Person hinting towards the same.
In the official club announcement, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Joel Glazer have given their thoughts on the departure.
Both have lauded Murtough’s work at the club and credited his loyalty at a time when there has been a huge upheaval.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe said: “We want to thank John for his loyal service over many years and for his support and integrity during this period of transition.
“He leaves with our best wishes for the future.”
Co-chairman of the club, Joel Glazer echoed similar sentiments, keeping the door open for Murtough as a “friend of the club”.
He said: “After 11 years of tireless work for the club, John has mutually agreed with us that now is the right time to step aside and allow the new football leadership structure to be put in place.
“He will always be welcome back at Manchester United as a friend of the club.”
While it is unlikely that many United fans would echo that sentiment as Murtough had become a maligned figure as his tenure drew to a close.
There were inklings that he could even stay on in a reduced role but ultimately, United getting Wilcox in and pursuing Ashworth meant he was going to become expendable.
It will be interesting to see where he lands next since it was always believed that his promotion to DoF at United was quick and also questionable.
