DStv Premiership: Every title winner since 1996/1997

Mamelodi Sundowns are well on their way to an unprecedented seventh consecutive top-flight league title and a 14th overall in what is the 28th season since the PSL’s professional era kicked off in 1996/1997.

That would represent a staggering HALF the titles for the Tshwane giants.

Talk about domination of South African football!

By contrast, the next best teams in terms of total titles won are Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates with ‘just’ four.

Good quiz question, the last team other than Mamelodi Sundowns to have won the DStv Premiership was Wits back in the 2016/2017 season.

Nine more points

Meanwhile, following Wednesday’s fixtures, Mamelodi Sundowns enjoy a 13-point lead atop the standings – and have two matches in hand over their nearest challengers Stellenbosch FC.

Mamelodi Sundowns have 53 points after 21 matches.

The best the Winelands side can do should they win their remaining seven matches is 61 points.

That means that Mamelodi Sundowns only require nine more points in their remaining nine matches to make mathematically sure of being crowned champions.

In all likelihood it will take fewer than that number as Stellenbosch FC won’t win their final seven matches and Mamelodi Sundowns enjoy a vastly superior goal difference compared to their rivals.

Masandawana are currently juggling CAF Champions League commitments with their league campaign.

In terms of DStv Premiership fixtures, Mamelodi Sundowns next face Sekhukhune United on Tuesday, 23 April (19:30).

That clash will be followed by a mouth-watering match against Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday, 30 April (19:30).

Should Mamelodi Sundowns pick up three points in both those matches, they will be in a position to clinch the title in another Tuesday match against Royal AM on 7 May (19:30).

Don’t bet against the Tshwane giants having been crowned champions long before then, however!
